Enhancing grid reliability through the installation of stationary electric generators
Ensuring uninterrupted network operation, maintaining smooth network management, and deploying new services are among the main objectives of the public institution "Plačiajuostis Internetas". Achieving these goals requires consistent improvements to the network infrastructure.
In response to the growing challenges related to electricity supply in various parts of the country and in order to ensure uninterrupted provision of wholesale communication services, the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania initiated the installation of 22 additional stationary electric generators in the network managed by the institution. In total, 59 stationary generators have now been installed in the network of "Plačiajuostis Internetas". These generators serve as alternative power sources in the event of main electricity supply interruptions. In 2025, two more generators are planned to be installed in the municipalities of Neringa and Trakai.
One of these devices has already proven its value in a real-life situation. According to the Neringa municipality administration, during a cultural event in Nida on April 10, an unexpected power outage occurred. The newly installed generator saved the day. The unit, installed in cooperation with Neringa District Municipality, had just begun its testing phase—yet the unplanned incident provided an excellent opportunity to demonstrate its efficiency in real conditions. In the evening, while the event was underway, a disruption in the power grid caused the main electricity supply to fail. The organizers responded immediately—within a few minutes, the new generator was activated, instantly restoring power and allowing the event to continue smoothly, while also ensuring the continuity of communication services.
"The generator is installed to ensure uninterrupted communication services not only in the event of disruptions, but also during emergency situations. This incident showed that the measures are working, and residents and visitors can feel more secure knowing that there is an alternative power source", said Jolanta Kavaliūnaitė, Head of the Network Management Department.
The generator is currently undergoing further testing under various conditions to ensure maximum efficiency.
"Around 31% of all network failures occur due to electricity supply issues, so we pay special attention to preventing such disruptions. As practice shows, the measures we apply—together with employee involvement, support from external contractors, and contributions from local municipalities—allow us to respond quickly and both implement innovative solutions and manage potential risks effectively", added J. Kavaliūnaitė.
