The public institution ‘Plačiajuostis internetas’ is celebrating its 21st anniversary
As we mark the 21st anniversary of the public institution ‘Plačiajuostis internetas’ on October 5th, let us look back on the key achievements of the past year. The organisation has continued to grow and develop, actively contributing to reducing the digital divide in remote regions. The ‘Ultra – fast connectivity infrastructure’ project was completed in 2026. The infrastructure created during the project provides access to gigabit-speed connectivity for 5,983 organisations: schools, libraries, hospitals, fire stations, businesses and other institutions promoting social and economic progress. During the project, 1,395 km of cable lines were laid across 52 municipalities, and all telecoms operators in the country have been granted the opportunity to use this infrastructure and provide services, meaning that connected organisations can choose the service provider that best meets their needs.
The public institution ‘Plačiajuostis internetas’ is not stopping at simply laying cables. As part of the ongoing ‘Development of ultra-fast communication infrastructure’ project, 60 contracts for the planning and construction of telecoms masts have been signed since the last anniversary celebration. The project aims to provide ultra-fast broadband access to 14,909 households and 1,348 businesses. A total of 63 masts will be built, ensuring connectivity in rural and remote areas. It will not only improve the availability and quality of connectivity but will also stimulate regional growth and business development.
The public institution ‘Plačiajuostis internetas’ provides 7,625 wholesale services, which are used by 41 telecoms operators, whilst network maintenance specialists on call around the clock ensure 99.98% service availability.
We would like to thank our customers, partners and staff for their support, cooperation and inspiration throughout the years. We are delighted with the successful implementation of projects and initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide. In the coming year, we will continue our ultra-fast communication infrastructure development project, implement innovative solutions and ensure that our operations are transparent, sustainable and beneficial to society.
