During the first quarter of 2025 – more than 200 new communication services

The start of 2025 was particularly active for broadband development in Lithuania. The public institution "Plačiajuostis internetas", which manages the public high-speed broadband infrastructure built with European Union and national investments, continued its efforts to ensure fast, reliable, and widely accessible connectivity throughout the country. Using the infrastructure developed through the institution’s implemented projects, telecom operators were provided with 208 new communication services. Additionally, several dozen previously delivered services were modified.

Donatas Bernatonis, Head of the Network Technologies and Development Department, notes that the growth in the number of newly provided services was strongly driven by competition among mobile operators in rolling out 5G services and the connection of new entities contributing to social and economic progress. Another significant factor was the implementation of the Ultra-Fast Connectivity Infrastructure project, through which 52 new services were delivered.

In the first quarter of this year, services were also launched in five new settlements—a major milestone in creating equal access to high-quality communication services for all residents of the country, regardless of their geographical location.

A few figures: by the end of Q1 2025, the institution was providing a total of 6,236 communication services, including 2,074 services delivered via fiber-optic cables and dense fiber infrastructure. The total fiber length exceeded 11,692 kilometers - roughly the distance you’d need to drive from Vilnius to Tokyo. A total of 3,872 services were dedicated to data traffic transmission.

But these figures are more than just statistics. Behind each newly launched and successfully operating service are tangible improvements: for businesses, faster processes and increased productivity; for communities, more reliable connectivity and easier access to digital services; and for people in rural areas - a real opportunity to become full members of the digital society.

Service quality is one of the institution’s key priorities.
"We consistently monitor and evaluate the quality of our services using the average monthly service availability rate. This reflects the time percentage during which clients can use the service in a given month. The quarterly indicator is calculated as the average of the three months in the quarter,” explains Jolanta Kavaliūnaitė, Head of the Network Management Department.

To ensure high standards, the institution sets a target availability rate of 99.98% per month. In the first quarter of 2025, this indicator exceeded expectations, reaching 99.99%. This means that connectivity was nearly always available to clients across the country. At the same time, it highlights that the network infrastructure is not only being actively expanded but is also professionally maintained, and that the services provided to operators are reliable and meet the highest quality standards.

All these results reflect the institution’s consistent efforts to advance broadband development in Lithuania, promote technological progress, and create a country where digital opportunities are accessible to everyone.
