Sustainability Report: how PI “Plačiajuostis internetas” builds connections with future generations
Digital progress can be not only faster but also greener — as demonstrated in PI Plačiajuostis internetas’s 2024 Sustainability Report. The institution, which provides wholesale broadband services across the country, presents its achievements in environmental protection, social responsibility, and governance.
One of the most notable accomplishments of 2024 was the significant reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Total emissions decreased by as much as 76.3%. At the same time, electricity consumption from renewable sources increased by 114%, while emissions intensity fell by more than 75%. The organization continues to strengthen its sustainability direction — expanding its electric vehicle fleet, modernizing and upgrading equipment, using a substantial share of electricity from renewable energy sources, and actively introducing innovations into daily operations. These steps make it possible to use energy resources more efficiently, reduce pollution, and contribute to overall climate change mitigation goals.
To further increase efficiency, PI Plačiajuostis internetas introduced two major technological innovations: an information system for linking services to network elements and a system for monitoring electricity grid parameters. These tools not only allow faster responses to disruptions but also ensure service quality and stability. The institution also maintains an exceptionally high network service availability rate of 99.98%, which has been consistently upheld for several years.
“Modern solutions allow us to respond quickly to challenges. The more efficiently we manage the network, the smaller the environmental impact of our operations — and the greater the benefits for both clients and the environment,” says Jolanta Kavaliūnaitė, Head of the Network Management Department.
In 2024, the number of services provided through the network continued to grow. Wholesale communication services were extended to 90 new settlements, bringing the total number of services to 6,132. Under the “Ultra-Fast Connection Infrastructure” project, more than 84 km of fiber-optic lines were built, enabling the connection of 618 socially and economically important facilities.
“We are pleased to see the digital divide shrinking. Every new connection line and every newly connected settlement means less exclusion and more opportunities,” says Donatas Bernatonis, Head of Network Technology and Development.
“Sustainable activity is impossible without employee engagement. Our employees are the backbone that ensures connections not only between technologies but also between people. Sustainable ideas and practices are born first in people’s minds and actions, shaped by their attitudes, values, everyday decisions, and ability to act responsibly.
Technological progress without the human factor — which encompasses empathy, cooperation, and awareness — loses its true meaning. Sustainability is not only about natural resources, energy efficiency, or waste reduction, but also about social justice, equality, and employee well-being. For us, sustainability means not only responsibility toward future generations but also daily care for those who shape the present — our employees, their working conditions, engagement, growth opportunities, and emotional health,” says Eglė Misienė, Head of the Legal and General Affairs Department.
In 2024, employee well-being was one of the organization’s main priorities. Across all job categories, average monthly salaries increased, reflecting both market trends and the institution’s commitment to ensuring a fair and competitive remuneration system. A low staff turnover rate indicates team stability and trust in the employer. Considerable attention was given to employee development, with continuous training and education programs organized throughout the year — ranging from professional and technological skills development to psychological well-being and emotional intelligence training. To foster a safe and healthy working environment, the institution conducted occupational risk assessments, psychosocial risk studies, and employee health checks. Additional occupational safety initiatives were also implemented to strengthen preventive culture and encourage a responsible approach to workplace safety.
