Ultra-Fast Connectivity in the regions: more than half of the project implemented

The digital divide in Lithuania’s regions is narrowing: 2025 has become a pivotal year in the implementation of the “Ultra-Fast Connectivity Infrastructure” project. Having achieved the planned objectives, access to gigabit-speed internet is now ensured for 2,580 entities that directly contribute to the country’s social and economic development. The installation of new equipment at fibre-optic network nodes has opened the door to new, high-quality wholesale services.
“By laying fibre-optic cables in areas where they previously did not exist, we are building a digital pathway to new opportunities in the regions. High-speed connectivity, even in the most remote parts of Lithuania, means not only growing businesses and better conditions for healthcare institutions, schools, and libraries. It is connectivity for people – for seniors wishing to stay in touch with their loved ones, and for young people building their future right here, at home,” says Minister of Transport and Communications Juras Taminskas.
Currently, the opportunity to connect to the infrastructure has already been provided to 2,580 entities across ten counties of Lithuania. In Alytus County – 238 entities, Kaunas – 476, Klaipėda – 231, Marijampolė – 349, Panevėžys – 209, Šiauliai – 281, Tauragė – 237, Telšiai – 61, Utena – 268, and Vilnius – 230. These figures include community organisations, medical and social care institutions, public order authorities, libraries, schools, agricultural, business and tourism enterprises, as well as telecommunications infrastructure facilities. This diversity demonstrates that the project encompasses not only economic and public-sector areas, but also the community, social, and cultural life of the country, thereby strengthening regional development.
The goal of the “Ultra-Fast Broadband Infrastructure” project, initiated by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and implemented by the public institution "Plačiajuostis internetas", is to reach 5,000 entities in commercially unattractive areas of Lithuania by the end of the project.
The developed infrastructure will be available to all telecommunications operators in the country to provide advanced digital services. As a result, connected entities will be able to freely choose their preferred service provider operating in the area and receive services tailored to their individual needs.
The development of gigabit-speed broadband infrastructure is aimed at meeting the growing expectations of telecommunications service users in Lithuania’s regions and enabling them to use very high-capacity electronic communications networks and receive exceptionally high-quality digital services.
Gigabit connectivity is also identified as one of the European Union’s strategic objectives to be achieved by 2030.
The “Ultra-Fast Connectivity Infrastructure” project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility plan “New Generation Lithuania.”
